We who stand before him, next to his plane, growing restless in the hot sun, we were also not always afraid. Or maybe we were but we had Jesus Christ to hold our collective fear and because of him we could pretend that in this life everything is certain. It is almost Easter and Christ is dead so he cannot collect our fear. That is why the pilot’s face is red as he rushes from the nose of the plane to its engines beneath its once white tail. Is there a problem? Is there a problem? There is a problem but the pilot does not speak English so he cannot make us less afraid.
For me, the word daughter was fraught with anxiety, even terror. How easily I had tossed it around with Grace. “My son is eight and my daughter is five,” I would say. “I can’t talk. ” “My daughter,” I would say proudly, and hold out a picture of Grace, a miniature of me with her blond hair and glasses. ” Within thirty-six hours, my daughter was dead. The word became sharp and painful. Friends uttered it with pride and exasperation about their own daughters as the months passed. And I, daughterless, smiled at the sports trophies and test scores, tried to sympathize with the hurt feelings and temper tantrums of all the daughters out there.
Funny. Athletic. Down to earth. Tinkers around the house. I like him very much, as a matter of fact. After an argument with my daughter, he tore up the photographs she had put on the refrigerator. They were, of course, snapshots of people she loved, friends and family standing with their arms around one another in front of some waterfall or marble monument. The act of tearing the photographs—one by one, in front of her? —seems to me a defining moment. It paints a portrait of a man who would, in anger, destroy her memories and, by extension, be willing to enact violence upon her or those she loved?
