Both male and female aborigines participated in diving to depths up to ten fathoms (60 ft), but later, when regulations forbade women divers, other divers came from Timor and Java. By 1873 more than 80 boats were pearling out of Cossack. Diving suits were first used in north western Australia in the 1880s, and in Torres Strait the first pearl shell was fished in 1868 from Warrior Reef, where diving dress proper was first used by white divers in 1874. In 1877 109 pearling vessels (63 with apparatus) working from island bases and Somerset settlement on Cape York, were officially operated from Port Kennedy on Thursday Island, the main port for Torres Strait and North Queensland pearling.

Although there is no record of pearls from North America having reached Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries, there were undoubtedly large numbers owned by the various tribes and interred in the burial mounds of the Indians.
