The first questionnaire was constructed by Professor Kjell H¨arnqvist, University of G¨oteborg, who himself was drawing a 10 per cent national sample of pupils born in 1953 for a similar survey within his Individual Statistics Project. The questionnaire contained three tests of components of intelligence, three attitude scales about education and school, five scales measuring leisure interests, and several questions on plans for future education, on school work and leisure activities. The second questionnaire consisted of additional items on interests, evaluations of various occupations, and three sociometric questions, in each of which we asked for three classmates.

From population registers, various items of population book-keeping were recorded, such as addresses, marital status, occupations, emigration and deaths, causes of death (including suicide), and number of children born to or living with the cohort members. In addition we had access to two main categories of registers. First, we obtained information from registers or lists of decisions or evaluative statements on events or situations, by various authorities or experts: THE LONGITUDINAL APPROACH 37 decisions by local Social Welfare Committees and Child Welfare Committees (social assistants), schools (teachers and local school committees); tax authorities, public prosecutors and courts and hospitals (physicians).

All other series covered the whole of Sweden, within which 96% of the cohort were still registered in 1983. Like the three surveys of our own, our census and military data sets refer to a given point or a short period in time, and so do the delivery and school data sets, as well as sick-leave and income data sets for the adult members. Other sets, those from the social registers on social dependency, juvenile problems and delinquency, and those on tertiary education, crime and hospital care, cover substantial periods, although the last-mentioned three sets were censured at the end of 1983, which we decided to see as the end of young adulthood.
