These receptors, in turn, activate heme oxygenase in neurons and presumably generate carbon monoxide, 8 which diffuses to the vessels to cause vasodilation by activating vascular guanylate cyclase. In addition, the present findings suggest that there is an interaction between the mechanisms initiated by activation of N M D A receptors and those initiated by activation of AMPA receptors so that the effects of each pathway antagonize the other. Thus, inhibition of N M D A receptors with MK-801 enhances the vasodilation induced by glutamate.

Chronic inhibition of NOS over the 6-week period substantially inhibited motor neuron death. 45 These studies demonstrate that chronic inhibition of nitric oxide synthase with moderate dosages of inhibitors of N O production can be remarkably protective. More specific inhibitors are slowly appearing, such as 7-nitroindazole for the neuronal isoform of NOS. 4 6 The interaction of N O with superoxide strongly suggests that the use of free radical scavengers with NOS inhibitors be thoroughly evaluated.

I've been on the road so much, that I knew about it from a newspaper report. And I saw the paper this morning. I don't know what to make of it. Does anybody know if fruit flies make nitric oxide? 36 Nitric Oxide and Oxidative Stress Joseph: In that paper, basically what it showed was, that when SOD is overexpressed, it actually improved the survival or prolonged the age, delaying the aging by up to 30%. So it has quite a profound effect. Beckman: Well, it goes to show that SOD does do something in vivo.
