Sometimes he made friends with the guests and he'd be invited to dinner or to a wiener roast on the beach. If he was in a good mood he'd bring flowers to me and the more favoured guests. His garden was in an open sunny spot near the barn. In the old days Muriel used to order seeds to be sent to him and the flowers were intended to grace Dollywood and Greystones. Then, only the perennials were left: sweet williams, phlox and peonies. Sometimes it was one long grumble from Mike, as when someone stored fish on the ice in an ice box.

John and I were making a business call to Beulah and Wilton Foster on Kashawakamak Lake. They had owned their property, Foster's Point, since 1954 and, getting along in years, were ready to sell. To our surprise they told us they had thought of buying Bon Echo when Merrill Denison had it listed for sale for $50,000 in 1954. With younger friends they had gone to inspect the property one Sunday afternoon. When they saw the scene on the beach with little children playing in the sand and adults sitting there obviously unconcerned about the naked man in their midst, they were shocked and left immediately.

One particularly dreary, rainy afternoon I built a fire to cheer us. As we all knew, a large toad lived in between the hearth stones and, as his premises warmed up, he hopped out to sit out of danger. He seemed quite tame. Carol toasted marshmallows at the fire and I sat squeezed into the child's wooden rocking chair which was really meant for David. Mike came to the door with an unknown lady and gentleman who had come to see the Denisons. As they stood just inside the door I rose to meet them.
