The thriving Swedish town survived Janssoris death in communal form for more than a decade. Visitors now enjoy its lingering Swedish flavor, faithfully restored buildings, and famous paintings of Olof Krans memorializing the Bishop Hill colony and its citizens.

When pressure from the imperial diet came upon them there, the community moved in 1672 to Altona (near Hamburg), under the tolerant jurisdiction of the Danish crown. It was there that Labadie died in 1674. His followers then returned to the Netherlands, settling on a noble estate in Wieuwerd, West Friesland. The Labadist society there gave up full community of goods in 1692 and was dissolved in 1732 following the death of its last spiritual leader. Earlier, in 1679-80, two Labadist agents, Jasper Danckaerts (1639-1702) and Pieter Sluyter (1645-1722), were sent under assumed names to North America to find a place for settlement.
