He was urged to run for the office of Governor, but he declined. Elisha H. Rhodes died at the age of 75 on Sunday, January 14, 1917, having spent his life in the service of his church, country, state and fellow men. The diary and letters consist of various slips of papers from small notebooks, letters, with the largest portion a journal re-copied by him in 1885 onto uniform-sized sheets of paper. It is written very simply in contrast to the texts of speeches he delivered as an officer and as a veteran, but it was written as a journal for him to refer to in later years and the rest were letters written whenever he could find the time.

We passed through their ranks, and entered our old grounds, “Bush Camp,” supposing the retreat to be at an end. William B. Sears Tired, hungry and wet, we laid down, only to be awakened about eleven o’clock that night to resume the march towards Washington, in the midst of a rain storm. The Regiment filed out of camp and marched to Fairfax Court House in good order and rested in the streets. Crowds of soldiers were hurrying by and the streets were blocked with trains. After halting a few minutes we started again and soon, in the darkness, rain and crowd, became broken up to some extent.

In the afternoon I tried to get a pass to go to Pawtuxet but did not succeed. The Captain did give me a pass to go out of camp but not to leave the city. He made me wear my belt and cartridge box, which rig I did not like, but not knowing enough of the world to disobey orders, I kept it on while I made farewell calls upon my friends. At night we had dress parade and the camp was filled with the friends of the soldiers. Frederick Miller presented me with a Smith and Wesson seven shooting revolver and a holster to carry it in.
