Recounting a 1937 case of a dismissed librarian and the lack of response of the American Library Association, this essay also traces early moves by the ALA to present tenure as a right available to all in the library profession and as a necessary condition for guaranteeing the intellectual freedom of library users. The post World War II movement to achieve faculty status for academic librarians began by presenting tenure as a privilege of academic status rather than as a right, as compared with the AAUP model of academic freedom.
