In 1783, the need to re-settle Loyalists along the banks of the St. Lawrence necessitated the expansion of the Crown's seigniorial obligations. In exchange for the expense of construction, the Crown received a monopoly on both enterprises throughout the area. Although Cataraqui Falls was a good five miles upstream from the settlement, the height of the falls and the volume of water passing over them made them irresistible as the site of the needed mills.

Once freed, the pounding waves prevented the ship from leaving, and she caught fire in a matter of minutes. When the crew abandoned ship, the wind shifted, and she floated into the harbour. Both the Cataraqui and the Lord Nelson, which was also alight, drifted towards the Penny Bridge over the mouth of the Cataraqui River. The smaller of the two ships, the Lord Nelson, was also lighter, and quickly covered the distance to the bridge, setting it ablaze. Fortunately, by this time the alarm had been raised.

Even though forty-two of her passengers had succumbed to the disease during the crossing from Dublin, all the survivors were cleared for passage to points upriver.
